lady gaga vs madonna
As is no doubt painfully obvious, I'm fascinated by popular culture and events that steer its direction. My fascination is drawn to captains of popular like Madonna, Lady Gaga, Britney etcetera like a meteor passing the earth when someone has just whacked our gravity up ten notches. What makes something popular and then what makes that something stick in our consciousness for decades? "Who cares" is probably most people's responses but I was fascinated by this article on MSN about Madonna's recent Super Bowl performance. It states she shrugged off would be pop queen Lady Gaga by reminding us of hits like Vogue. Compared to Lady Gaga, the article says, "at this point in her career Madonna had given us Holiday, Lucky Star, Borderline, Like A Virgin, Material Girl, Crazy For You and Into The Groove." Basically, Lady Gaga doesn't have enough songs that have not only tapped into pop culture, but smashed a lasting crater in it. Which led me to think about the way Lady Gaga has seriously messed up the single choices from her recent album. Had she released Judas, Americano, Government Hooker, Hair and Bad Kid instead, I have no doubt that article would have had a different conclusion. However Lady Gaga didn't and I'm left over analysing the situation. Interestingly, in an interview with PopJustice last year, Lady Gaga felt songs like Americano and Government Hooker weren't radio friendly which is probably why she didn't release them as singles. Young Madonna would never had gone with the safe option, and you don't get meteor craters by playing safe. Add new comment
